DEMANDE D’AFFICHAGE MUNICIPAL POUR “FAREWELL COVE”
REQUEST FOR MUNICIPAL SIGN FOR “FAREWELL COVE”     

À/TO : Maire de la ville de Gaspé – Mayor, Town of Gaspé et/and Conseil Municipal de la ville de Gaspé - City Council, Town of Gaspé    

 Nous, les citoyens de Farewell Cove et d'autres personnes intéressées par la démarche,  demandons au maire de la ville de Gaspé, et au conseil de la ville de Gaspé, d'allouer des fonds pour ériger un panneau municipal pour Farewell Cove. We, the citizens of Farewell Cove and other interested persons, request the Mayor, and Council of Town of Gaspé, allocate funds to erect a municipal sign for Farewell Cove.  

La reconnaissance de notre patrimoine a été demandée de nombreuses fois depuis que Gaspé a commencé à ériger des panneaux identifiant les anciennes municipalités. Recognition of our heritage has been requested numerous times since Gaspé started to erect signs identifying former municipalities.  

En 2008, il y a eu des réunions demandant deux panneaux, l'un pour Péninsule et l'autre pour Farewell Cove. Ce qui en a résulté fut un seul choix, soit le panneau pour Péninsule. Farewell Cove n’avait pas été retenu et la raison invoquée fut le manque de budget. In 2008, there were meetings calling for two panels, one for Peninsula and the other for Farewell Cove. What resulted the panel for Peninsula. Farewell Cove had not been retained and the reason given was lack of budget.  

En 2014, la ville de Gaspé a été approchée. Bien qu'il y ait eu un intérêt, l'enseigne Farewell Cove n'a pas été faite. In 2014, the city of Gaspé was approached again. Although there was interest shown, the Farewell Cove sign was not made.  

Donc pour ces raisons, une fois de plus, nous les citoyens de Farewell Cove demandons qu’un panneau d’affichage soulignant notre identité soit installé.So for these reasons, once again, we, citizens of Farewell Cove are asking for a signpost underlining our identity to be installed.  

Nous attirons votre attention sur les points suivants pour justifier l'importance de Farewell Cove: We bring to your attention the following points to substantiate the significance of Farewell Cove:  

1. Des limites officielles. Farewell Cove est situé entre Rosebridge et Péninsule. Les limites sont Mosher's Brook (également connu sous le nom Mill Brook) à l'ouest et Annett's Run Bridge à l'est. Cette zone a d'abord été enregistrée en 1817 par Philip Coffin ; Official boundaries. Farewell Cove is situated between Rosebridge and Peninsula. The  boundaries are Mosher’s Brook (also known as Mill Brook) on the West and Annett’s Run bridge on the east.This area was first settled in 1817 by Philip Coffin; 
2. Farewell Cove a un statut officiel de la Commission de toponymie du Québec depuis 1983 (Fontenelle et  Cap aux Os depuis 1968 – Penouille en 1974 – Rose Bridge non inscrit) (Annexe B);Farewell Cove has an official status of the Commission de toponymie du Québec since 1983 (Fontenelle and Cap aux Os 1968 - Penouille 1974 - Rose Bridge no registration found)  
3. Farewell Cove a été utilisé pour des générations de pêcheurs comme lieu de départ car il était et est toujours un lieu d'amarrage sûr et protégé pour les bateaux; Farewell Cove was used for generations of fishermen as a place of departure because it was and still is a safe and protected mooring place for boats;  
4. Farewell Cove devient un emplacement significatif pour 2 moulins à bois et une entreprise de fabrication de portes et de fenêtres; Farewell Cove became a significent location for 2 lumber mills and a manufacturing business of doors and windows; 
5. Toujours connu localement comme Farewell Cove, le nom est devenu officiel le 1er mai 1919 lorsqu'un bureau de poste a ouvert ses portes dans une résidence locale. Le bureau de poste de Farewell Cove a fonctionné dans divers foyers de 1919 à 1969, année au cours de laquelle la livraison en milieu rural a commencé; Always known locally as Farewell Cove, the name became official May 1, 1919 when a post office opened in a local residence. The Farewell Cove post office operated in various homes from 1919 until 1969 when rural delivery started;  
6. Farewell Cove se retrouve encore sur de nombreuses cartes, dont celle de la garde côtière du Canada. Le bulletin météorologique pour Farewell Cove s’affiche sur le Weather Netwrok et Meteo Media. Farewell Cove is still found on many maps including the Canadian Coast guard. The weather report for Farewell Cove can be found on the Weather Network and Meteo Media;  
7. Depuis 1973, Farewell Cove est sur la liste des stations de surveillance de la température de Berkeley Earth pour la science climatique et l'analyse stratégique. Since 1973, Farewell Cove is on the list of Temperature monitoring station of Berkeley Earth for climate science and strategic analysis.              

Farewell Cove fut un hameau très important de la péninsule gaspésienne. Son histoire riche et intéressante lui a valu plusieurs écrits bien documentés dont « The Dancing waters » & « Fifty Summers on the Sea » par Leigh Boyle Coffin et par Madame Dorothy Phillips dont le dernier « A history of Peninsula et Farewell Cove » . Farewell Cove was a very important hamlet on the Gaspé Peninsula. Its rich and interesting history has earned it several well-researched writings including "The Dancing Waters" and "Fifty Summers on the Sea" by Leigh Boyle Coffin and by Mrs. Dorothy Phillips including the last "A History of Peninsula and Farewell Cove". 

Le fait d’ériger un panneau d’affichage Farewell Cove serait la reconnaissance de tous ces faits et événements qui ont façonné l’histoire de la ville de Gaspé et un hommage important aux hommes et femmes de ce coin de pays.   The establishment of a Farewell Cove municipal sign would be a recognition of all the facts and events that shaped the history of the City of Gaspé and an important tribute to the men and women of this part of the country.
