46-year-old retired coach starts
Yeo Oh-hyun (46), coach of IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, who is starting anew as a leader after retiring from active duty, said, "I want to hear that he is a leader who breathes together and communicates together."
Yeo Oh-hyun is participating as IBK Industrial Bank of Korea's new coach at the 2024 Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) women's tryout in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. He is a "newcomer coach" who has joined the team less than 15 days ago. He started working in earnest during the Asian quarter draft on April 29, and trained with the team's players only for about three days to participate in the tryout of foreign players. "I watched a lot of videos of female players. It was different from what I thought, so I thought I should study a lot," Yeo said.
Coach Yeo Oh-hyun, who was born in 1978, retired from Hyundai Capital after the 2023-24 season. As he passed through Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Hyundai Capital, he has thrown his body countless times. He ranks first in the history of digs, receiving accurate, and successful defense in men's history. He also holds the record of participating in 625 games, the most in men's history. He has signed the most free agent contracts five times. He also successfully achieved the "45-year-old project" to retire at the age of 45.
Yeo will start anew as the coach of IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, where Kim Ho-chul, former Hyundai Capital teacher, is at the helm. "Coach Yeo is well-managed and sincere enough to serve as a player until he is in his 40s. He will be able to become a good leader," Kim Ho-chul said. "Players will learn a lot from defense and receiving. I brought him here with high expectations."
Coach Yeo Oh-hyun said, "Honestly, I had a lot of fear, thinking, 'Will I be able to do well? I'm grateful that the coach gave me strength to say, 'I can do well.'"
Yeo used to be a Libero who specializes in winning championships. She has the second largest number of championship rings (nine) in history, following Yoo Kwang-woo (Korean Air, 11 times) from Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance. Unfortunately, she failed to wear the 10th ring that she aimed for. "It hurts my heart. Honestly, if I have no greed, it would be a lie. As a player, I really wanted to fill it up, but I regret that I retired with only one piece of puzzle left," Yeo said.
Another regrettable thing is that I couldn't say goodbye to my fans in Cheonan. "I can't do it right now, but I'm not going far away. I'm in the volleyball world, so I think I'll have the opportunity to officially greet my fans anytime," Yeo said. "Thank you for your support and applause. I hope you will support me so much so that I can grow as a leader."
Yeo Kwang-woo, the son of Yeo Oh-hyun, is playing the same libero as his father. If Yeo continues his active career and Yeo starts the draft after graduating from high school, the father and son could be seen running together. The son reportedly responded by saying, "Really? What's wrong with your father?" Yeo said, "My dad decided to try a new challenge, too."
Yeo is committed to doing her best as a leader as well. "(It is my first time in the women's team) but volleyball is played by players and people anyway," coach Kim Ho-cheol said. "When I was a player, I wanted to be a player with energy and enthusiasm. I will help our players do the same."
