Macau Casino Employees Improve Q4 Earnings Above 2019 Levels
The number of full-time workers in Macau's gaming sector fell 0.8% year-on-year to 51,771 in the fourth quarter of 2023, but average earnings excluding "irregular pay" rose 6.8% year-on-year.

The average monthly wage for full-time employees was 25,290 (US$3,139) in December, up 6.3% year-over-year, according to a recent survey.
Macau's casinos have been recovering business since early 2023 following the end of COVID-19-related restrictions in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
Average gaming employee revenue in the last quarter of 2023 was up 2.6% compared with average salary MOP24,640 in the fourth quarter of 2019, before the pandemic began in early 2020.
Official data showed the Macau gaming division employed a total of 58,225 full-time employees in the last quarter of 2019. This represents a 12.5% increase from the three months to Dec. 31, 2023.
As of the fourth quarter of last year, Macau employed 23,359 table game dealers, down 362 from a year earlier. Their average revenue was MOP20,870, up 5.4% from a year earlier, but down 1.0% from the last quarter of 2019.
The quarterly survey does not include people working for a VIP gambling junket promoter or junket employee.
"As the economy gradually recovers, demand for staffing in the gaming sector has increased," the bureau noted.
The number of job openings in the game sector in the fourth quarter of 2023 was 400, up 387 from the same period last year.
