So Jaehwan claims Asia's first gold in sledding event
Bobsledding hopeful So Jaehwan (Sangji Daegwallyeong High School) has earned Korea's second gold medal of the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics (Gangwon 2024) in Gangwon-do Province.
So on Jan. 23 posted a combined time of 1 minute, 48.63 seconds in the first and second periods of the men's monobob (single-person bobsleigh) at Alpensia Sliding Centre in Pyeongchang-gun County, Gangwon-do.
He is thus the first Asian to win gold in a sledding event (e.g., skeleton, bobsleigh or luge) in the first Winter Youth Olympics to be held in Asia.
Jonathan Lourimi (1:49.46) of Tunisia clinched the silver in the event and Chi Xiangyu (1:50:18) of China took the bronze.
Lourimi's medal was all the more meaningful since he received training from a program inspired by the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The Tunisian was introduced to and began training in his event through New Horizons Academy, which was founded in 2020 and is jointly run by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the province's government of Gangwon-do State and Pyeongchang-gun. Sponsored by the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation, the academy trains winter sports athletes from underdeveloped and developing economies.
Bobsleigh is a sport in which athletes push and drive sleds on an ice passage either individually or in groups of two or four. Unlike a regular Winter Olympics in which a team of two or four members drive a sled, 스포츠토토사이트 Gangwon 2024 officially adopted just the individual event monobob.
the fourth day of Gangwon 2024, biathlon star Antonin Guy, 17, from France became the tournament's first to win three golds. His first came on Jan. 20 in the men's 12.5 km individual, his second on Jan. 21 in the single mixed relay and his third two days later in the men's 7.5 km sprint.
